Getting On the Right Track to Organize

Do you read organizing tips and try to de-clutter only to fall off track... again?

There’s a lot of confusion about de-cluttering. Most people focus on what to do, and getting it done in a hurry. That’s a one way ticket to getting derailed.

You need to back up.

Before ever boarding the de-cluttering train, you need better tracks for the train to run on:

1) a new direction, and

2) good preparation.

Only then can you enjoy the trip.

A New Direction:

  • There’s nothing wrong with you if you have a lot of clutter; most of us do.
  • Clutter accumulation is simply the result of certain beliefs and habits. Minor adjustments to both make a big difference to where you end up.
  • Attacking your clutter once and for all will just wear you out. Putter through your clutter in little bits through time, as you go down the tracks.

 Good Preparation:

  • Decide where you want to go, and stay focused on that. One drawer, closet, box at a time.
  • Schedule no more than 2 hours at a time to jump on board.
  • Bring what you need: black plastic bags for trash, white plastic bags for donations, a journal for notes, to name a few.

With these train tracks in place, instead of getting derailed, you’ll be able to continue the journey, getting on and off the train at will. A much more pleasant trip indeed. Enjoy!
